At 11pm, Typhoon Koinu was centred at about 70 kilometres south-southwest of Hong Kong and is forecast to move west-northwest to the Pearl River Estuary.
The forecaster said Typhoon Koinu had been tracking westwards steadily, and its associated hurricane force winds are gradually departing from the seas south of Hong Kong.
“The rain bands will persistently affect the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary… and bring squalls to the region. Winds may occasionally be up to gale force,” said acting senior scientific officer Ho Chun-kit.
The No.9 signal had been issued at 9pm and the Amber Rainstorm Warning signal was also in effect.
Meanwhile, officials announced that all school classes will be suspended on Monday and employers are encouraged to make flexible work arrangements.
Citybus said it would not be running overnight and daytime routes, while the MTR said only underground railway services would be provided on a limited basis.
Eleven men and 10 women had sought treatment by 10pm, while 209 people have sought refuge at 29 temporary shelters. There were also 14 reports of fallen trees.
The Drainage Services Department said it would send out regular reports on flooding, adding that It’s sent 80 teams to check at flooding hotspots.
