Tse said the SAR authorities have been conducting sample testing on aquatic products imported from regions besides the ten prefectures ever since Tokyo started releasing contaminated water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant.
He pointed out that no food samples have exceeded standard radiation levels so far.
“On the number of positive samples which will trigger a total ban, we don’t have a threshold in mind. So far we are banning aquatic products from ten metropolises and prefectures. We think at the moment it is sufficient,” Tse said in response to questions from several lawmakers.
“If there are indeed positive samples coming into Hong Kong. We’ll look at the reason behind that and see how widespread the situation is and whether a more widespread ban is needed.”
He added that the government has spent around HK$10 million so far on the food inspections.
