Silver for cyclist Lee Sze-wing in women’s omnium

Hong Kong cyclist Lee Sze-wing on Friday won a silver medal in the women’s omnium event at the Asian Games – her third medal in Hangzhou.

The event consists of four races in the same day – scratch, tempo, elimination and points. Lee scored an overall 127 points, 11 behind Japan’s Yumi Kajihara, who won gold. China’s Liu Jiali was third.

Lee came first in the tempo race, and finished second and fourth in the scratch and elimination races respectively. She was fifth in the final points event.

The 22-year-old cyclist said she was satisfied with the outcome.

“I’m happy because this is an individual event. So this can be a prove of myself. Before the race I was nervous, because when it reached the third [elimination] event, I felt some pressure,” she told HOY TV.

“In the first two races I did very well, but I made some mistakes in the third event. But this is a good, rare experience. This mistake is very important for my future development.”

It was Lee’s third medal in three days, having won a silver in the madison event and a bronze in team pursuit over the last two days.

Also in the velodrome, Leung Chun-wing and Leung Ka-yu finished fourth in the men’s madison event, behind Japan, South Korea and Kazakhstan.

They finished the 50-kilometre race with 31 points, six points off bronze winners Kazakhstan. The Japanese won the race despite both riders having crashed early in the event.
