Mercury to hit 7 degrees, but it’ll feel ‘a lot colder’

Marcus Lum

Hong Kong will experience bone-chilling weather this week as the winter monsoon from the north drops the mercury to 7 degrees Celsius tomorrow, with the observatory saying it will feel colder due to prominent wind chills.

”An intense winter monsoon and upper-air disturbances will affect Guangdong in the next couple of days,” the observatory said yesterday. “Temperatures will fall further and it will be very cold and windy with a few rain patches over the Guangdong region.”

The minimum temperature is expected to drop to seven degrees Celsius tomorrow -11 degrees lower than today’s high of 18 degrees. The lowest temperature today will be 10 degrees.

Ta Kwu Ling is expected to dip to only 2 degrees tomorrow morning, while Tai Po, Lau Fau Shan, Sha Tin, Tseung Kwan O, and Cheung Chau are expected to drop to 5 degrees.

The observatory urged people to keep warm and look after the elderly and chronically ill.

The weather will remain cold on Wednesday, with a low of 8 degrees in urban areas. The low on Thursday is 11 degrees.

Upper-air disturbances will continue to bring rainy weather to southern China and Hong Kong in the latter part of the week.

The weather will be mainly cloudy with one or two rain patches starting from Saturday to January 30 and the city will see temperatures ranging from 14 to 22 degrees.

Meanwhile, the mainland saw the first cold wave of the year. The Central Meteorological Observatory issued a yellow alert for cold waves and a blue alert for blizzards and strong winds yesterday.

The weather is expected to persist in the central and eastern parts of the country. Many southern regions will be affected by the blizzard.

The weather authority forecast that temperatures in most parts of Jiangnan and Guizhou may drop to minus seven degrees tomorrow and on Wednesday, and the daily minimum temperatures in southern China may range from zero to seven degrees – the coldest this winter.

Heavy snow or blizzards are also expected in Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, and Chongqing, with some areas potentially experiencing snow accumulation exceeding 10 centimeters

The snowfall is forecast to spread to Fujian, Guangxi, and northern Guangdong today.
