No business like snow business

Ivy Ong-Wood

Dreaming of a white Christmas? You’re more likely to find it indoors rather than out in Hong Kong, thanks to the mall decorations.

Inspired by romantic European ski resorts, IFC mall has turned its Oval Atrium into a SnowPark for the festive season. Seven checkpoints feature life-size installations and interactive activities to make visitors feels they’re really in a snowbound landscape.

Check in at the Gear Up kiosk, whose A-frame architecture and interior are reminiscent of holiday homes in Scandinavia.

After registering on the campaign website, you can generate an artificial-intelligence photo for free to use on your digital pass.

Upon creating a digital Explorer Pass, you can begin your journey with a ride on the ski lift and enter the 8.5-meter-tall Christmas tree to experience a virtual snowfall, before venturing into the interactive zones to discover skiing and other winter activities.

If you want a physical pass as a keepsake, you can buy one and earn shopping privileges at over 40 mall tenants by donating HK$100 to the Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF at the Gear Up kiosk.

Plan your trip well and you can also watch live-music performances at the venue. The 45-minute performances start at 3pm today and tomorrow as well as December 16, 23 to 26 and 31.

Landmark travels even further north for its festive decor. Towering over its atrium is Mount Santa Paws, a gigantic snow-covered mountain populated by a over 100 animals and festive friends.

Themed “Celebrate the gift of each other,” the holiday decorations tell a heartwarming tale of how dreams can be realized through friendship and the power of togetherness. Emma the Mouse, Santa Paws the Polar Bear and their friends embark on a journey to catch a wishing star that makes Christmas wishes come true.

Children can join them on their adventures at 12 stations set against the snowy ski landscape of Mount Santa Paws, with a photogenic Alpine Adventure ski lift leading to the mountain top, highlighted by a multi-colored skyline of the northern lights.

All proceeds from tickets for the All-in-One Mount Santa Paws Experience will go to Landmark’s charity partners.

Among the fun activities are the Santa Paws Ski Chalet, which dispenses treats at a push of hidden buttons, a five-meter-long Snowy Sled Slide and Timmy’s Ski Adventure immersive virtual-reality skiing experience.

And don’t forget to bring home a souvenir from the gift shop as all proceeds from the sales will go to the four charities.

For a real(ish) snowfall instead of a virtual one, head to Lee Tung Avenue. Every night until January 1, artificial snow will turn the shopping street into a winter wonderland.

The snow is the perfect finishing touch to The Wishing Stars art installation by cross-media artist Victor Wong. In his second collaboration with Lee Tung Avenue, the multiple-time winner of the best visual effects award in the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards used over one million acrylic beads to construct a Corridor of Wishes along the 200-meter-long pedestrian walkway and a five-meter-wide mega Christmas star above the Central Piazza, along with other decorations.

During the day, the colorful beads reflect daylight and glitter like jewels while at night, the art installation glows in the colors of rainbow, another symbol of hope.
