Tate’s Cairn Tunnel will shut for an hour on Sunday morning prior to the HKeToll payment system going onstream, the Transport Department said.
Transport commissioner Angela Lee Chung-yan said the tunnel connecting Diamond Hill to Sha Tin will be closed from 4am to 5am to activate the new toll system.
”During the closure, overnight bus route N680 will be diverted to take the Lion Rock Tunnel,” she said.
Tate’s Cairn Tunnel will be the seventh to welcome the HKeToll system.
”Six government-tolled tunnels have already implemented HKeToll. We are handling an average daily volume of 430,000 vehicles. The operation has run smoothly,” Lee said.
Following the implementation, drivers will no longer need to stop at toll booths to make payments.
About 6,000 cases of drivers evading tunnel tolls since the HKeToll system was implemented in May will be taken to court by the end of next month, Lee said.
”Motorists should note that late payments will incur a surcharge of HK$175, and that the maximum penalty for evading tolls is HK$5,000 per trip, and the license of the vehicle concerned will not be renewed,” she warned.
The department said over 810,000 vehicle tags have been issued, which accounts for more than 99 percent of licensed vehicles in Hong Kong.
”About 92 percent of vehicles have opened HKeToll accounts, and about 73 percent of vehicles have set up automatic payment.”
With Tate’s Cairn Tunnel’s HKeToll system going onstream, differential fares during rush hours will be introduced at the three cross-harbor tunnels from December 17.
Since May, authorities have launched the system at the Tsing Sha Control Area, Shing Mun Tunnel, Lion Rock Tunnel, Aberdeen Tunnel, the Cross Harbour tunnel and the Eastern and Western harbor crossings.
