World Vision Hong Kong’s “low-carbon version” of 30-hour Famine to raise funds for children and families suffering from hunger in Africa ended on Saturday, with participants fasting for eight or 30 hours, experiencing “heated hunger.”
It was the first time the charity held a “low-carbon” edition of the event.
The two-day event at Noah’s Ark on Ma Wan Island from Friday to Saturday featured low-carbon activities such as a hunt challenge, an electricity-generating bike challenge, and upcycling workshops.
Former director of the Hong Kong Observatory Lam Chiu-ying shared his views on carbon emissions injustice and ways to go green in everyday life during a sharing section.
The event ended with a finale concert on Saturday evening, featuring local bands and singers, including Yoyo Sham Ning-yi, poetic pop duo per se, rappers Heyo and Triple G, and indie band ROOT.
World Vision Hong Kong’s chief executive Amy Fung Dun-mi said: “After experiencing record-breaking weather events, climate change has made its presence felt in Hong Kong, making us more aware of the hardship caused by natural disasters and hunger faced by people living in poor countries.”
The proceeds of this year’s 30-Hour Famine will go to World Vision’s projects in Africa, providing food supplies, healthcare support, water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities to affected children, families, and communities.
