Delivering his speech at an economic forum during the China International Import Expo in Shanghai, Chan hailed the success of the city’s green bond programme which raised funds for environmentally friendly projects.
“The green and sustainable bonds issued last year raised more than US$80 billion – one-third of Asia’s total in issuance size. Moving ahead, our aim is to speed up the development of an ecosystem for green technology,” he said.
“Our goal is to transform Hong Kong into the leading fundraising platform for green capital and green programmes.”
The finance chief said it will be extremely costly for countries to work towards achieving carbon neutrality, and it is therefore crucial to raise enough funds to drive zero-carbon projects.
