A series of measures were unveiled in the Policy Address to lure global talent, including adding eight outside universities to the Top Talent Pass Scheme and relaxing visa requirements for people from Vietnam, Laos and Nepal.
On an RTHK programme, Sun was asked whether measures rolled out by Shenzhen to lure talent – including rent subsidies – are more appealing than those of Hong Kong.
He said competing for talent is not a zero-sum game and Shenzhen’s move will only gather more professionals in the Greater Bay Area.
“The whole Greater Bay Area needs talent to develop and Hong Kong and Shenzhen are close neighbours. If both cities compete for talent, it will create a convergence effect,” he said.
“But I don’t think Hong Kong needs to learn from others when it comes to competing for talent… What people cherish most about Hong Kong is our system. It’s a free society and it’s very convenient to travel around. Our educational resources are very rich.”
Sun said the government currently has no plans to provide rental housing subsidies for outside workers, adding that it will prioritise the housing needs of locals.
