An insiders guide living in HK & Cyberport Hong Kong

Wondering what it’s like living in HK? It’s always good to talk to the neighbours! In our regular Street Talk feature, we get the inside scoop from residents of different areas. Here, we chat to Tracy Wong about living in Cyberport Hong Kong, restaurants in the area, the Cyberport Waterfront Park and more things to do in the neighbourhood!

The Specifics

Name: Tracy Wong
From: Canada
Occupation: Director, Chilli Fagara

Where are you living in HK? Cyberport.

How long have you been here? Over 10 years – and the area doesn’t get old!

Why this suburb? It’s nice and quiet here, and it has a gorgeous dog park. It’s also an exciting up-and-coming neighbourhood that’s fun, with lots to do.

What transport is available in your suburb? Cyberport is more accessible than people think. Public transport options such as MTR, taxis and buses are always available, and there are also shuttles provided for residential areas.

What’s the closest store to your front door? Fusion, where I shop regularly for necessities. It’s super convenient and is usually my one-stop shop for everything I need.

The Scene

What’s the unofficial uniform of your suburb? Casual – t-shirt and shorts, or general sportswear will do. It’s a chill neighbourhood so everyone is there to take it easy and enjoy themselves!

What’s a common myth about your area? As soon as Cyberport is mentioned, people automatically think it’s just a business park, but the truth is, there is much more than just businesses here; it’s brimming with nature, history and beautiful scenery!

What does a massive late night rager in your suburb involve? We haven’t really had any to be honest – it’s been very nice and peaceful since I’ve lived here!

What do you do when you’re in need of a dose of culture or nature? I go around the Cyberport Waterfront Park within and adjacent to the neighbourhood, or sometimes I go somewhere more off the beaten track than Cyberport, such as hiking in the mountains in Sai Kung.

What’s a mandatory stop for taking guests from out of town? Chilli Fagara, for sure! It serves traditional, hearty Chinese and Sichuan cuisine that’s also very palatable for visitors and tourists. Since it’s been around for 18 years now, Chilli Fagara remains very close to my heart and I love bringing friends from out of town to have a taste, whether they like spice or not!

The Superlatives

Where do you get the best local food? I tend to go to Sheung Wan for local food. It’s such a diverse area that never gets boring, with traditional restaurants that have been around for years, plus new and exciting concepts that keep popping up around us. The options are endless.

What’s your hands-down favourite neighbourhood joint? At the moment, it’s new Vietnamese restaurant MâmAmis in Sheung Wan.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen in your neighbourhood? There seem to be lots of tourists who come and visit Cyberport, which is rather strange for me, as in my mind it’s just a normal little town like any other in Hong Kong.

What are the best bargains in the neighbourhood? Honestly, I would say that Sheung Wan and Wan Chai have more bargains than you’ll find at Cyberport.

What’s your guiltiest local pleasure near home? Late night spicy ramen noodle soup!

What’s one thing you’d never change? My job and living in Hong Kong.

If the city gave you HK$5 million to soup up your area, what would you do? I would probably spend it on building a food court within Cyberport where dishes from my restaurants can be served in my neighbourhood, surrounded by the beautiful view. Or I would spend it on an alfresco café where people can bring their pets to dine surrounded by that same view.

Cyberport Fact File

Conceived in 1999 and opened in 2004, Cyberport is located beside the sea on the western edge of Hong Kong Island, south of Pok Fu Lam. It’s a mixed-use hub that incorporates a digital community of over 1,900 start-ups and technology companies, with an emphasis on fintech, smart living, esports and AI, as well as residential developments and a retail arcade with restaurants and shops. Also in the area is a hotel, Le Meridien Hong Kong, Cyberport – it reopened last year after a major makeover. And Cyberport Waterfront Park is a green space fronting the sea, with paths for walking and cycling and plenty of space for picnics or pets to run around.
