Mirror Burger is one of those places that you hope never expands to too many locations because its space is too cozy, the quality too well-controlled, the prices too friendly, to want anything more. The narrow Sai Ying Pun shop is small, but you don’t get the sense that you’re expected to eat and dash here. With subtly upscale hamburgers on the menu like the soft shell crab burger (HK$98) with their secret tartar sauce or housemade veggie burger (HK$62) with a sunny side up egg and sprinkle of blue cheese (add HK$18 to make it a combo – we suggest the Burdock Fries, there’s a very strong ‘Live slow and savour’ vibe at this hidden gem of a Hong Kong burger spot.

Smash’d is one of the few burger restaurants in Hong Kong where you can find smashed hamburgers. Generally agreed to be invented in Colorado, USA, this is where the chef presses a loosely packed beef patty into the pan or grill surface, caramelizing as much of the outer surface area as much as possible while the short cooking time keeps the inside of the patty moist. The result is a ratio of just-charred outsides with a juicy middle that you simply can’t find in a conventional beef patty; try the Classic Smash’d Cheese Burger (HK$78) to get in on the hype. This burger spot in Kennedy Town also offers vegetarian and sustainable seafood options, such as the Captain’s Catch Burger with a crab meat patty (HK$78).
