Worker dies at govt construction site in Yau Ma Tei

A worker died on Tuesday in an industrial accident at a Yau Ma Tei construction site under the government’s Architectural Services Department.

Officers said the incident occurred at around 2pm at the site on To Wah Road.

The worker, 56, was responsible for cable installation work at a height of four metres.

He fell to the ground and suffered head injuries.

The victim was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Director of Architectural Services Edward Tse said in a statement that he was deeply saddened by the accident, adding that the department has requested the contractor to provide appropriate assistance to the worker’s family.

“The Architectural Services Department has immediately halted the related construction works and will fully assist the relevant departments in investigating the cause of the accident. In addition, the department will closely monitor all its contractors to ensure that they implement sufficient and appropriate safety measures when conducting work involving working at heights,” the statement said.

The Labour Department has conducted an on-site investigation and is trying to determine the cause of the incident.

The department also said the contractor cannot resume work at the site until officers are satisfied with the safety measures it takes.
