Observatory issues T3 as Koinu moves closer

The observatory issued the Strong Wing Signal Number 3 at 5.40pm on Friday as typhoon Koinu continues to edge closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong. It said the signal will remain in force until at least 4am on Saturday.

“Koinu has compact circulation and continues to move westwards steadily towards the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary with typhoon strength. Local winds will become generally strong gradually, reaching gale force occasionally on high ground,” the forecaster said.

“Depending on the intensity and speed of movement of Koinu, as well as the distance of its associated gale winds from Hong Kong, the observatory will then assess the need for issuance of higher tropical cyclone warning signal.”

The weatherman said there will be swells, and people should stay away from the shoreline.

It added that there will be squally showers in the coming two to three days, and showers will be heavy at times on Sunday and Monday.
