Cathay cancels Tel Aviv flights amid red warning

Cathay Pacific canceled flights from Hong Kong to Tel Aviv today and Thursday after the government issued a red travel warning amid the military conflict between Israeli forces and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The Hong Kong government raised the travel advisory level for Israel to red on Sunday night as the country declared war against Hamas.

“Residents who intend to visit Israel should adjust their travel plans and avoid nonessential travel, including leisure travel,” a spokesman said.

“Those already there should monitor the situation, exercise caution, attend to personal safety and avoid protests and large gatherings of people. Residents should avoid all travels to Gaza and nearby areas as well as areas along the border with Syria and Lebanon due to the volatile security situation

The Immigration Department, as of 5pm yesterday, received 21 inquiries from Hong Kong residents in Israel.

Five of them have safely returned to Hong Kong and six have safely left Israel.

The department said it will continue to stay in contact with the remaining 10 to provide appropriate advice and assistance.

The department has also been informed of a tour group of 30 Hong Kong residents currently in Israel, with some returning to Hong Kong earlier. The department will maintain contact with the tour group and provide feasible assistance based on their preferences.

A pastor leading a tour group from Hong Kong to Israel said yesterday that its members are now trying to leave in batches.

The department is offering information on direct or connecting flights for Hong Kong residents in Israel who were originally scheduled to return at a later time.
