The language of flowers | The Standard

The fashion-inspired floral displays at Armani Fiori in Alexandra House used to be the highlight of my daily commute. Sadly, the shop has closed but I can still get my fix thanks to the new Armani Fiori book (US$120 or HK$936).

The 192-page coffee-table book is a journey into the creative universe of Giorgio Armani in the fields of fashion, home decor design, and textiles – where design and nature merge to create unique floral arrangements and designs.

Through the 200 color photographs and accompanying text by Armani himself, Harriet Quick, Dan Rubinstein and Renato Bruni, the hardcover tells the story of Armani/Fiori, established in Milan in 2000 with the opening of the Armani/Manzoni 31 store.

Agave, bamboo, tulips, oxypetalum, and heliconia come together to create extraordinary arrangements that are almost scultural.

The design is composed of sleek, clean lines and inspired by the delicate refinement of ikebana, the Japanese art of arranging cut flowers.

In line with the designer’s aesthetics, the book, published by Rizzoli, is simple yet sophisticated with a silk cover, a back with visible binding, and Japanese-style inserts.

“Harmony: that is what the world of flowers suggests to me. A harmony of shapes and colors, but also of nature and culture, of wild beauty and creativity. An absolute union of thought and spontaneity, resolved in shapes and colors that touch the gaze as much as the heart,” said the Italian designer.

“Working with flowers, or around flowers, is exciting, for the creativity and vitality of nature shines through in all its glory, in turn inspiring human creativity. I like the idea of disciplining the exuberance of botany, yet allowing that exuberance to take hold of me. It is always a dialogue, enriching and full of surprises.”

At the Hong Kong launch, a cocktail party held in the Giorgio Armani boutique at Alexandra House. florists from the Armani Fiori team showed off their expertise by skillfully arranging flowers that complemented the ready-to-wear collection in the store.

All proceeds from the royalties of this book will be donated to the Forestami urban forestation project, which aims to plant three million trees by 2030, in order to clean the air, improve living conditions in and around Milan, and counter the effects of climate change.
