Runner dies after taking part in HK Marathon

A 30-year-old man has died after taking part in Sunday’s Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon.

Police said the runner collapsed on the platform of the Tin Hau MTR station at around 1.15pm and died after being sent to Ruttonjee Hospital.

Separately, event organisers said 842 people were injured during the races, with at least 34 of them being sent to hospital.

One of them was a 10km male runner who collapsed before reaching the finish line.

The chief of medical services for the event, Dr Lam Kin-kwan, said the man’s heart stopped beating at one point, but his condition improved upon arrival at the hospital.
