The number of local registered firms in Hong Kong is at a seven-year high, rising by nearly 3 percent to 1.43 million in 2023, the highest since 2017, statistics from the Companies Registry show.
A total of 132,246 local firms set up shop in 2023.
And the number of foreign firms rose by 2 percent year on year to 14,826, including 960 newly established ones.
A total of 134 prospectuses were registered, one more than in 2022.
The number of charges on properties of companies received for registration in 2023 was 12,368, 31 per cent down from 18,024 in 2022.
The number of notifications of payments and releases received for registration decreased by 12 percent from 20,185 in 2022 to 17,648 last year.
As many as 188 limited partnership funds were registered to reach a total of 737 in 2023.
There were 4.9 million searches conducted through the registry’s electronic search services in 2023, an increase of 5.5 percent from 2022.
And 429 licenses were granted to trusts or company service providers under the anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing ordinance, with 6,945 licensees registered by the end of the year.
