Deepfake of city’s chief reaps no ROI

The government yesterday cautioned citizens not to believe a deepfake video created by artificial intelligence circulating online that impersonates Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu promoting an investment program with high returns.

The government clarified the video is “fictitious with fraudulent intent, and strongly condemned those who have attempted deception in the name of the Chief Executive”.

A government spokesman reminded citizens not to easily trust such alleged investment advertisements or promotional videos online and advised the public not to provide personal information, register to join related apps or open any links.

”They should not provide their personal information online, sign up for mobile applications, or open any links. Members of the public should remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of such content,” the spokesman said.

This incident has been referred to the police for follow-up investigation.
