Councillor proposes neon signs to boost economy

A district councillor said on Thursday he believed putting neon signs at street level around Tsim Sha Tsui could boost economic activities in the area, as the installations could provide photo opportunities for tourists and residents.

DAB’s Chris Ip of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council told an RTHK programme that it’s one of a series of activities he’s proposing in the run-up to the Lunar New Year, including illuminated dragon dancing, history and culture tours and a discount campaign.

However, speaking on the same programme, Kenneth Kwong of the Marketing Department of Hang Seng University noted that similar ideas were being proposed in different districts.

He expressed concern that this could lead to an overlap of resources.

In response, Ip said his council could coordinate with other districts to achieve greater synergy.

“At the moment we don’t have plans to coordinate with other districts. But if we have plans that are rather big, say in the past we had different district councils jointly organising events,” he said.

“If we discover events that can boost the synergy effect and grow the pie, I would very much welcome that.”

He said he hoped his council would meet soon to discuss the ideas, adding that he looked forward to attracting more people to the area.
