Cathay underestimated impact of flu: CEO

Cathay Pacific’s CEO Ronald Lam on Thursday said the airline had overestimated the number of pilots it had available on standby and was forced to cancel some flights when staff came down with flu.

Lam apologised for the recent travel disruption, but said 12 flights a day will be cancelled in the coming weeks.

“I must emphasise that all the current flight cancellations have been processed and completed a few days back, so these are not new cancellations,” he said.

The airline earlier said it was working to ensure services won’t be affected during next month’s Lunar New Year holiday.

Lam said a working group will be set up to assess the root causes of the flight cancellations and to come up with improvement measures.
