Swire Pacific director Merlin Swire yesterday said the group is optimistic about the development prospects of Hong Kong and has confidence in the one country, two systems policy.
Swire made the comment at a meeting with Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office director Xia Baolong in Shenzhen.
Xia praised Swire for establishing roots in Hong Kong, supporting one country, two systems and promoting the city’s economic development.
Xia said one country, two systems has been successful and is recognized by many countries.
“It has given rise to Hong Kong’s rapid economic development, a sturdy foundation to develop as an international financial, logistics and trading center and a top-notch business environment for the city,” Xia added.
He said Beijing will continue to accurately and unswervingly implement one country, two systems and firmly support the city’s unique position and advantage.
“Hong Kong’s future is broad and promising under the construction of a strong nation and the new journey of national rejuvenation,” Xia said. “I hope the Swire Group can continue to firmly support the one country, two systems principle, participate in China’s plan to remain opening-up with a high standard and share the benefits of the huge Chinese market while contributing to the economic and social development of Hong Kong.”
The Swire Group is privately owned by London-based John Swire & Sons Ltd. It has been in Hong Kong for over 150 years.
Swire Group pledging to continue to increase investments in the city and mainland while actively participating in the growth of the Greater Bay Area.
Hong Kong Liaison Office’s director Zheng Yanxiong and deputy director Liu Guangyuan were also present at the meeting.
Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macau Studies vice president Tam Yiu-chung said Xia was trying to stabilize foreign investments with the Swire meeting.
Xia meeting Swire could be seen as part of Beijing’s policy to promote investment as the British company has been a significant business partner of China.
Tam also made reference to President Xi Jinping’s scheduled meeting with US businesses and Xia’s meeting with the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce on Thursday.
“I believe it is also a sign of the central government enhancing communication with the global business sectors after the Central Economic Work Conference [in December 2022],” Tam said.
