Talent search takes step forward

Staff reporter

The newly established Hong Kong Talent Engage office allows Hong Kong authorities to take a more proactive role in competing for talent, office director Anthony Lau Chun-hon said.

The office is cooperating with Sing Tao’s JobMarket to recruit mainland talents for 300 SAR job positions in the finance, property and commerce sectors.

Speaking in an interview with Sing Tao Daily – The Standard’s sister publication, Lau said the office, which was established on October 30 with 38 officers, has designated teams targeting the mainland market, overseas cooperation and data analysis.

Lau said the government launched the HKTE website last year but that could only play a passive role in attracting talent.

Now with a physical office, government officers can travel to places around the world, including the mainland, to engage in face-to-face communication with talent and introduce Hong Kong’s advantages so that they can be convinced stay in the SAR for the long term.

He said a designated team recruits mainland talent and teams on overseas markets will visit various universities and science parks around the world to promote the city.

The office will assist the talent during visa application, help them solve problems upon arrival and even help them polish their resumes and look for apartments, jobs or education opportunities, Lau said.

He said that greater importance is attached to job opportunities and treatment than the cost of living including expensive housing in Hong Kong.

Prospective talent would think that since rent is expensive in Hong Kong, they would just live in a smaller flat and “come to Hong Kong because of opportunities despite a small living space.”

Meanwhile, the office will cooperate with JobMarket to hold a recruitment event at the Shenzhen campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong on November 26, offering at least 300 job opportunities from various enterprises in the financial, real estate and business services sectors.

Lau said the office agreed to the cooperation immediately upon receiving Sing Tao’s invitation, saying it supports all recruitment activities.

The media can work with the authorities to introduce Hong Kong to non-local talent, he said, adding the cooperation can lead to a “win-win” situation.

Guangdong is the first stop of the recruitment tour and the office may host more events in other mainland provinces in the future.

Before leading the HKTE office, Lau served as Hong Kong Tourism Board executive director from 2007 to 2019. He said the two jobs share some similarities as both aim to attract people to Hong Kong.

But hunting for talent has to be more precise and officers should know where to find them, he said.
