Swede holiday | The Standard

Ivy Ong-Wood

Step into a Scandinavian storybook at Ikea’s Christmas market. Open from now until January 1 at the atrium of East Point City, it is unmissable – thanks to a five-meter-tall blow-up of its famous Fabler bear.

Visitors can check out the set-ups to get ideas for their Christmas home, write postcards to be sent for free to loved ones in Hong Kong as well as get a taste of Swedish festive goodies such as cinnamon rolls (HK$12) and a taro-filled little bear bao (HK$5, discounted from HK$8) from a booth in the market.

On the shelves are an array of festive homeware ranging from decorations and dinnerware to packaging decorated with Swedish folk-art elements from the new Vinterfint Christmas collection.Traditional handicraft detailing such as weaving and embroidery complement the theme.

There are plenty of ideas for setting the holiday mood – from baubles featuring the denizens of a Scandinavian forest for the tree to Christmas stocking embroidered with Swedish folkloric patterns and strings of LED lights in festive shapes.

For the holiday table, Ikea has recreated quintessential Scandinavian dining aesthetics with white and gold accents as well as fairytale motifs.
