Hong Kong should continue to open up to the world and serve as an “adapter” for China amid deglobalization, liaison office director Zheng Yanxiong says.
Speaking at the International Forum on China’s Economy and Policy at the Central Government Offices in Admiralty yesterday, Zheng listed what Hong Kong should do, from legislating Basic Law Article 23 to maintaining a free economy and innovative development.
The forum, coorganized by the Chief Executive’s Policy Unit, was attended by 400 experts, academics, businesspeople and think-tank representatives.
Zheng said social stability is the foundation of boosting Hong Kong’s development.
”With the firm support from the central government, Hong Kong has survived a series of severe situations since the handover and resumed stability,” he said. “Hong Kong will be able to maintain a safe development environment in the long-term by implementing the SAR’s constitutional responsibilities, punishing criminals who endanger national security, completing the seventh district council elections smoothly as well as the legislation for Basic Law article 23.”
Zheng said the city must continue to develop into an innovation center and cooperate with the Greater Bay Area and others who feature globally. He urged Hong Kong to attract more nonlocal enterprises and talented people while speeding construction of the Northern Metropolis.
Officials should also come up with measures to improve livelihoods, he said.
Although land in Hong Kong is expensive the city still has 24 country parks, Zheng noted, going on to call for a balance to be struck between economic development and environmental protection.
He also said the liaison office will continue to serve as a “super-connector” between Hong Kong and the mainland and the office will fully support the city’s policies.
At the same forum, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said the central government has stressed enhancing Hong Kong’s status as an international financial center, showing Beijing’s approval of the SAR.
”Hong Kong should continue to give full play to its strengths and actively integrate into national development while maintaining a high degree of internationalization,” he said.
Hong Kong will also actively explore new areas to boost its economy, including development of innovative technologies, medications and new energy transport.
