Food Angel applied for a short-term lease from the government last year for a plot of land in To Shek Street, Shatin and was granted permission to build a three-story Food Angel Jockey Club Food Production Centre.
This will enable it to centralize its production units and double meal production to 40,000 meals daily.
The center is expected to be completed in early 2025.
In its first three years, the production center will also provide around 3.3 million special meals for around 15,000 disadvantaged senior citizens with swallowing difficulties.
The center will be equipped with various green features and will be supported by a smart supply chain management system to reduce food waste. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said the government will make every effort to promote source reduction and recycling of food waste so Hong Kong can achieve carbon neutrality and sustainable development.
