Some 17,000 visitors went to the M+ Museum to view its vast collections for free yesterday to celebrate its second anniversary.
Among the visitors were about 300 early birds, many from the mainland, who were waiting patiently half an hour before the museum opened at 10am. They were later allowed entry in groups by 10.30am.
The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority said earlier last month that the museum would offer free tickets on its anniversary, adding that the museum had seen over 4.6 million visits since opening in 2021. The daily average is 10,000 visitors
”To commemorate this milestone and express gratitude for public support, visitors can enjoy free access to all general admission exhibitions, including the latest exhibition ‘M+ Sigg Collection: Another Story’ and free public programs without preregistration,” the museum said on Facebook on November 1.
Some mainland tourists said they particularly went to Hong Kong for the free pass. Zeng, from Shenzhen, said he set aside a day to come to the city after he only managed to visit the Hong Kong Palace Museum during his other visit.
”I barely finished visiting the HKPM in one day as there were so many exhibits in it and it was very tiring,” Zeng said.
He said he spent four hours at the M+ Museum, which “displays many artworks from different countries and I can feel a strong cultural atmosphere here.”
Cao, from Chengdu, came with her parents and waited in line as early as 8.45am.
”I changed our travel plan to visit the museum, after I got news about free access from social media,” she said.
”This is a modern museum and art pieces from Hong Kong and other places are exhibited here,” she said, adding that it shows a good understanding and respect for different cultures.
Another visitor, surnamed Cheung, said this was her second visit to the museum with her friends.
”I like the environment and facilities,” she said. “I will see the exhibition slowly and in detail this time.”
Visitors enjoyed free access went through the Artist Square entrance. Free-visit areas included all galleries on the B2 and G floors, south galleries, east galleries, the Cabinet and a special exhibition “M+ Sigg Collection: Another Story” on the second floor.
M+ Museum has announced its 2024 program, which includes a special exhibition about well-known architect I M Pei in June and a showcase of China’s first couture artist Guo Pei’s collection in March.
