Around 270,000 people were drawn to the three harborfront venues under the Night Vibes Hong Kong campaign as of end of October, the deputy financial secretary, Michael Wong Wai-lun, revealed yesterday.
In a written reply to Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong lawmaker Benson Luk Hon-man, Wong said over 25 events have been or are being held as part of the campaign that was launched in mid-September.
He said that as of end of last month, some 270,000 people visited the night-time bazaars in Wan Chai, Kennedy Town and Kwun Tong.
The lantern carnivals held during the Mid-Autumn Festival also drew 660,000 revelers, including 300,000 people at Victoria Park, Wong added.
Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Science Museum and Hong Kong Space Museum received at least 7,200 visitors during the extended opening hours.
Over 430,000 people watched the National Day fireworks on both sides of Victoria Harbour whereas the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival attracted 140,000 visitors after returning to the Central Harbourfront after a five-year hiatus.
Wong said shopping malls recorded increased visitor flows too.
”A variety of events across the territory could create a lively festive atmosphere and, at the same time, bring more businesses to different sectors such as tourism, retail consumption and catering,” he added.
Citing a 20 to 30 percent increase in business for some merchants, Wong said some mall operators had told him the nighttime activities had helped motivate consumption.
Wong said more events will be rolled out for Christmas, New Year countdown and the Lunar New Year to generate a festive atmosphere. The Home and Youth Affairs Bureau will also promote organizing activities in various districts in the first half of next year, he added.
Wong said it would take time for people to adjust their lifestyle after the pandemic.
”Night Vibes Hong Kong provides more choices of night-time activities in Hong Kong, allowing citizens and tourists to participate according to their interest while revitalizing the city’s nightlife at the same time,” Wong said.
”We will continue to consider the views of the public, review the effectiveness of the campaign in a timely manner and listen to stakeholders’ views on the potential future development.
”Meanwhile, the government will keep exploring every possible means to boost our overall economy, including night-time economy.”
