Men’s bridge team win HK’s eighth gold at Asian Games

The Hong Kong men’s bridge team on Friday cruised to a gold medal at the Asian Games, the eighth for the SAR.

They beat India 229.1 to 152 in the final.

In six sessions in the title round, the SAR team of Lai Wai-kit, Mak Kwok-fai, Ho Wai-lam, Gordon Ho, Alan Sze and Abby Chiu won all but one of them.

The team took another step forward at this year’s Games, having won silver in Jakarta in 2018.

Overall, team Hong Kong’s eight gold medals equal the tally achieved at the Guangzhou Games in 2010.

“I’m so happy that I don’t know how to describe it. Lai and I are partners and we’ve waited for this gold for five years,” Mak told HOT TV after the win.

“For our team we’ve prepared for this Asian Games for more than three years. I’m so excited, I don’t know how to describe it.”

He said he hopes the medal will be an encouragement for bridge players in Hong Kong in the long run, saying he’s turned professional and hopes more people will do the same.
