LingU develops tracking map to boost mosquito-control

Lingnan University (LingU) said it has introduced a real-time mosquito tracking map to help the government and property managers better fight the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, the head of the university’s science unit, Paulina Wong, explained that the map utilises data collected from more than 30 mosquito killer lamps installed across 16 districts.

Along with other meteorological and environmental data, she said the map can determine the mosquito risk level in each district for the day – and the over next three days.

Wong said the project – which received a funding of HK$3.3 million from the government last year – can help authorities and property managers implement mosquito control measures more effectively.

“Knowing [that the risk] will be quite high for next three days, maybe, we will just do another spray or another convention control. So, I guess for the citizens and also for the property management [companies], this will be an important thing,” she said.

Wong noted that Tuen Mun is currently one of the districts facing the highest mosquito risk, adding that mosquito infestation will be worse at areas close to swamps and bushes, or are poorly ventilated.
