Eyebrows, toasts raised during Koinu

Eyebrows were raised while Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung was found absent from the government’s interdepartmental meeting last Friday while Typhoon Koinu was barreling toward Hong Kong.

This after a social media post by the Security Bureau, responsible for coordinating emergency response, saw Under Secretary for Security Michael Cheuk Hau-yip chairing the meeting with 14 bureaus and departments for preparation of the typhoon.

What caught everyone’s eye was not only Cheuk chairing the meeting instead of his superior Tang but also the absence of him in photos.

The Security Bureau explained that Tang was on leave from Friday to Sunday to attend his daughter’s wedding with Cheuk as the acting Secretary for Security during his absence. Tang said in previous interviews that he has a close relationship with his daughter, and when asked about her falling in love, he said: “Make me a grandfather, and I will be very happy.”

Sources said the daughter of Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung’ also got married last week.
