Rock down to electric avenue

Hong Kong’s electric car market in the fourth quarter welcomes the debut of a batch of Chinese-made products, including BYD Seal, Dongfeng’s Seres 3 and Smart’s latest domestic vehicles.

BYD’s battery-electric, compact executive fastback sedan models offer customers in Hong Kong three versions to choose from: AWD Performance, Extended Range Premium, and Standard Range Dynamic. These models come with a minimum price of HK$376,000, HK$349,000, and HK$309,000, respectively, under the one-for-one replacement scheme.

The top speed of the model is capped at 180 kilometers per hour, while the acceleration from zero to 100kmh is anticipated to take about 7.5 seconds for the standard models and just 3.8 seconds for the AWD Performance variant.

Inspired by BYD’s “Ocean Series” concept, BYD Seal boasts an X-shaped front end that exudes sportiness and style.

High-speed charging is not a problem as it can achieve a full charge in just 26 minutes.

Besides, BYD Seal is the first model to be equipped with in-house developed cell-to-body technology. The cutting-edge technology integrates the Blade Battery seamlessly into the car’s body, forming a strong “sandwich” structure that can achieve a remarkable torsional rigidity equivalent to luxury cars.

Some of the newer models will only be available next month with more details of price and car information to be released.

Two models of Seres 3, from Dongfeng Motor Group, are currently available in Hong Kong: the Comfort and the Premium – with a minimum price of HK$228,000 under the one-for-one replacement scheme.

As a standard-size SUV for daily commuting, the model combines ultimate practicality and luxury design. Its superior technology brings an exceptional range of up to 405 kilometers.

Seres 3 can accelerate from zero to 100kmh in less than nine seconds and has a top speed of 155kmh with three different driving models. The Eco mode keeps energy consumption to a minimum and prefers range to performance, while the Normal mode simplifies daily journeys and the Sport mode gives priority to a dynamic driving style with excellent performance.

For the interior, Seres 3 come with a 10.25-inch touchscreen that integrates navigation, media, and connectivity functions effortlessly. DAB/FM/AM radio is standard, as well as USB and Bluetooth.

Jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and China’s Zhejiang Geely Group, the new generation of Smart vehicles are manufactured in mainland factories.

Currently, two models of Smart vehicles – #1 and #3 – are available for sale in China. Only the #1 model is set to arrive in Hong Kong during the fourth quarter.

Smart #1 has dimensions of 4,270mm in length, 1,822mm in width, and 1,636mm in height, with the wheelbase measuring 2,750mm.

In China, Smart #1 is offered in five different versions, all featuring a single-motor rear-wheel drive layout. These models are priced between 179,000 yuan (HK$195,160) and 245,000 yuan.

Smart #1 can go from zero to 100kmh in just 6.7 seconds. The charging time is about 5 hours to 7 hours from 10 to 80 percent of the battery under alternating current mode. With direct current charging, the vehicle will only take about 30 minutes to recharge from 10 to 80 percent of the battery.

Smart #1 will be available in Hong Kong in two versions, Premium and Brabus.
